Tóm tắt: Abstract: Vietnam’s performance in PISA 2012 and 2015 has created a stir among education experts and policymakers around the world. Vietnamese secondary students showed that they had the competencies to grasp the core mathematical skills in solving realistic situations. Vietnamese mathematics teachers have strong mathematical content knowledge and know how to develop students’ mathematical thinking (OCED, 2016). From the above statements, we will try to describe and give reliable data to analyze the potential of Vietnamese students in understanding concepts and core mathematical skills in solving realistic problems. The results showed that realistic problems creat an active learning environment in the classroom and students make a cycle to understand mathematical concepts. The cycle includes three main steps: proficiency in mathematical skills, understanding concepts and applying skills in solving open-ended realistic problems.
